Smoke alarms

Queensland smoke alarm legislation

Queensland has some of the strictest smoke alarm laws in Australia, with full compliance required by 1 January 2027. These laws are designed to improve early fire detection and save lives.

All homes—whether owner-occupied, rented, or being sold—must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed. This means when one alarm activates, they all sound throughout the property.

To be compliant, smoke alarms must:

  • Be photoelectric and meet Australian Standard AS3786-2014
  • Be interconnected (wired or wireless) so all alarms trigger together
  • Be installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of the home
  • Be powered by either hardwired 240V (installed by a licensed electrician) or a 10-year battery

These requirements already apply to rental properties and homes being sold (since 2022), with all remaining properties required to comply by 2027.
